For those of us who have been before, coming to Taransay  seems normal! On the other hand, we have all been before and know the million questions which remain unanswered. So whilst we don’t want to give away all of the answers here are a few of the FAQs which everybody wants to know before setting off.

A Dozen Taransay FAQs

1.What to expect at Taransay Fiddle Camp?

Fiddle classes from 9.30am to 3.30pm. with world class tutors.

Keyboard lessons with Andy Thorburn.

Gaelic Choir rehearsals 5.00pm nightly.

Typical evening events will be something like:

Monday Night-Session in the Steading.
Tuesday Night-Highland Games and Golf Tournament.
Wednesday Night-Tune Writing Competition(all students are encouraged to write a
tune if possible), Cabaret and Gaelic Choir.
Thursday night-Marquee Dance
Friday Night-Concert in Tarbert Village Hall with performances by students and tutors followed by session next door in Hotel Hebrides.

Students are required to book their own accomodation in advance for the friday night after the concert and session in Tarbert.

4. How much does the Fiddle camp cost and when do you pay  for fiddle camp?

A deposit is required to secure a space as the camp is oversubscribed each year.

You can pay in advance to Woody or on arrival on Taransay.

Cost is £300.00 for the week.This includes all classes,food,boat trips to and from Taransay,sessions , dances and all activities.

The Taransay Inn on Taransay charges £1.00 per item.

5. What should i take to Taransay fiddle camp?

A fiddle,recording equipment for classes,tent,sleeping bag,wet weather gear,waterproof footwear,some money for cds , merchandising and refreshments.

The boatman Capitan Macrae has asked if we could keep luggage to a minimum.

5(b)When does the fiddle camp start?

Starts Monday morning as soon as possible.The boat starts ferrying students from Ardhasaig to Taransay early monday morning.This is a 10 minute journey.

8.How can I get to Taransay?

The Island of Harris is easily accessible by both ferry and airplane. Within 1 hour you can be somewhere beautifully different.

Car / Ferry From the south, the usual approach is via the A82 / A87 to Uig on the Isle of Skye, via Kyle of Lochalsh, the Skye Bridge and Portree.

The Skye to Harris ferry, departing from Uig, takes 1 hour 40 minutes. Hotel Hebrides is situated at Tarbert pier.

You can also travel on the Ullapool to Stornoway ferry by following the A9 / A835 north of Inverness. Hotel Hebrides is only 45 minutes by car from the terminal building.

Departure point for Taransay is Ardhasaig pier two miles north of Tarbert,Harris

Plane / Car Hire

There are regular flights to Stornoway from Glasgow (50 minutes), Inverness (35 minutes) and Edinburgh (1 hour). Car Hire is available from Stornoway Airport.
